Plenty of people now ask <a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gemini.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gemini<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perplexity.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perplexity<\/a>, or just read Google's AI Overview, and stop there without clicking a single link. So how do these tools pick whose content to quote? Mostly, they go for information they can check against other reliable sources, and for pages that are kept up to date. Original research, a named author, solid proof, a close fit with the topic and fresh information all help. To see how this plays out, we ran a small test of our own. Below, we look at why AI cites one brand and skips another, and what you can do to show up more often.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_heading_0 et_pb_heading et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_heading_container\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">We Asked AI the Same Question Across Multiple Platforms<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_2 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module preset--module--divi-text--default\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We kept it simple. On 21 October 2026, we typed \"What skills will digital marketers need in 2026?\" into four tools, word for word, and wrote down every source they leaned on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funnily enough, the advice hardly changed from tool to tool, because AI skills and data analytics turned up near the top every single time. ChatGPT came back with a ten-point list and tagged AI tools as \"Top priority\". Gemini went for six headings, one of which was Generative Engine Optimization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perplexity wrote just two short paragraphs after researching for all of four seconds. Google's AI Overview, for its part, ran through GA4, short-form video and SEO for AI search. The real split showed up in who each of them trusted. ChatGPT went straight for research reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini and Google, on the other hand, mostly quoted blogs written by training institutes, while Perplexity paired an American university's page with an email-software company's blog. So one question gave us four rather different ideas of who counts as an expert.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_heading_1 et_pb_heading et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_heading_container\"><h2 class=\"et_pb_module_header\">Who Did AI Cite, and Why?<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_3 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module preset--module--divi-text--default\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We opened every cited page we could and checked what it actually had. We also checked the page that ranked first on Google in an earlier run of the same search, since it wasn't cited anywhere.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The editing is just quick cuts of two seconds or so, set to \"Love Me Like You Do\", and the Reel loops straight back into the kick. There's no CTA at all.
